Last year’s cheapest tariff rises the most
In every premium region we took the cheapest tariff of 2026 and checked what it costs in 2027 (adults, deductible 2'500, without accident cover). Result across 36 regions: last year’s cheapest rises by +7.7% on average, the median of all tariffs in the same region by +5.4%. It is still the cheapest in only 8 of 36 regions, and drops out of the top 5 in 9. The year before was the same: the 2025 winners rose by +8.5%, the market by +4.8%.
So if you switch to the cheapest insurer once and then stay, you often lose the advantage the very next year. It pays to compare every year. Often a different model with your current insurer is enough: moving from the standard model to the cheapest other model of the same insurer saves a median of CHF 871 per year.

How we calculate
We use the FOPH premium data for 2026 and 2027 (opendata.swiss) and the number of insured persons per insurer and canton. Our reference is an adult aged 26 or over, deductible 300, with accident cover, standard model. The change per insurer and canton is the mean across premium regions. Averages across several insurers are weighted by number of insured persons. The FOPH calculates across all models and deductibles, so our figures differ slightly.
Changes in individual tariffs compare the same tariff of an insurer in both years. A new tariff is marked “new”. Insurer names come from the FOPH list of licensed health insurers.
